Here’s some more dope on Mani Ratnam’s Guru. The flick has newcomer Arjan Bajwa playing Nusli Wadia, a one-time bitter rival of the Ambanis. However, for the sake of dramatisation of events, the name of the character has been changed to Arzaan.
A major portion of the plot revolves around the conflict between Dhirubhai Ambani and Nusli Wadia. When quizzed about his character, Bajwa says, “I play the lead negative character and I do offer opposition to Abhishek’s character in the film. I’m not aware of any such similarities though.”
Clinching a Mani Ratnam film at the outset of his career remains a big achievement for Bajwa.
This former Gladrags runner-up has already been cast in five Telugu films. It’s a lesser-known fact that Anurag Kashyap had recommended him to Mani Ratnam. Says Bajwa, “I had auditioned for a crucial role in Anurag Kashyap’s Gulel. However, things didn’t work out and he was looking for an older guy. Ultimately, the film was put on hold. It was on Anurag’s recommendation that I met Mani Ratnam.”
Bajwa managed to impress Ratnam with his histrionic skills. Initially, he was marked for the role of Shyam Saxena, that was originally offered to Viveik Oberoi. Eventually, it went to R Madhavan.
Says Bajwa, “At that point, I was a little disillusioned. But Anurag had prepared me for it. He had told me that there’s a possibility of Maddy (referring to Madhavan) getting that role.” Later on, he was asked to audition for another role. Little did he know then that he’d land himself the lead negative role. “I was thrilled when they offered me this negative character. I couldn’t have asked for more.”
Being with Mani sir
Talking about his experience, Bajwa informs that he bonded well with Junior Bachchan. He says, “Most of my scenes were with Abhishek (Bachchan). He was extremely cordial and friendly with me. Being a first timer, I was naturally anxious but Abhishek made me feel comfortable.”
The newcomer prefers to call Mani Ratnam a scientist. He explains, “There have innumerable occasions where Mani sir would take shots differently. I would never understand the need for such shots till I saw the edited material. He’s got brilliant vision,” concludes Bajwa.
The richest industrialist in the country Mukesh Ambani has achieved another distinction. Amabani’s new house Antilia has consumed 6,37,240 units of power and the current bill for one month is a whopping 70,69,488 rupees!
However considering his wealth the current bill of 70 lakhs is small change for Mukesh Ambani, wat say?!
Chief Minster Y S Rajashekar Reddy is yet to give his nod for Anil Ambani’s proposed project in Hyderabad. The project is a 100-storied Twin Towers. Anil Ambani’s Reliance Energy was the highest bidder in the open auction and quoted Rs. 6.57 crore per acre.
But the government is yet to issue the Letter of Intent to the successful bidder. It is being said that Ambani’s close friendship with former UP CM Mulayam Singh Yadav is the reason behind the delay. Mulayam is a bitter critic of the Congress and its chief Sonia Gandhi. And therefore Y S Rajashekar Reddy does not want to offend the party high command by rushing things to accommodate Anil Ambani
The Ambani’s in Business and Yash Raj Films in Filmdom are spreading like creepers and what if they collaborate to open new spheres of competition.
While little brother Anil Ambani had already collaborated with Adlab films, Big Brother Mukesh Ambani makes his decision to collaborate with Yash Raj Films only recently. So lets see how big the YRF budget gets after this collaboration!
Mukesh Ambani not world's richest man, says Reliance
2007/10/30 15:57:20 NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries moved swiftly on Tuesday to deny a report that company chief Mukesh Ambani has become the world's richest man thanks to a surge in stock market.
An agency report putting his wealth at $63.2 billion hailed his rise as another triumph for the nation's booming economy.
But Reliance said Ambani was not quite so rich after all, with a net worth of somewhere in the region of $50 billion.
The multi-billionaire was listed by Forbes magazine earlier this year in 14th place among the world's richest people with an estimated wealth of $20.1 billion, way behind Microsoft's Bill Gates on $56 billion.
The breakneck rise in benchmark Sensex index, which rocketed to 20,000 points on Monday, after gaining nearly 4,000 points in six weeks, meant 49-year-old Ambani was now worth 63.2 billion.
"They are completely wrong. They have done double calculations," Reliance spokesman Tushar Pania said, explaining that Ambani, 49, does not have a direct share in Reliance Petroleum.
Ambani's wealth was calculated on the strength of his holdings in Reliance Industries and group companies Reliance Petroleum and Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Limited.
It needs no mention that the Big B and SRK rivalry dates back to a long time. So much has been written about it that it hardly makes any news. The recently relauched KBC has Shah Rukh Khan hosting the show and a new round of verbal duel was seen between the two leading stars of Bollywood.
All this has set director Sunil Darshan thinking. He saw a great story in all this and immediately got a script ready. He will make a film on the bitter rivalry between the two stars. The film is titled ‘Shaka Laka Boom Boom. Bobby Deol, Upen Patel will be the main protagonists in the film. Celina Jaitley and Kanganan Ranawath are the female lead. The film will go on sets in April.
The Indian low cost airline GoAir has signed up Preity Zinta as their brand ambassador. She will be part of the marketing campaigns of GoAir. The airline will start a campaign 'Chalo India, Lets Fly Smart' soon which will feature Zinta.
According to the Managing Director of GoAir, Jeh Wadia, Preity is vibrant, young and innovative and these are the qualities which go with the airline's brand personality. Interestingly, Preity's friend Ness is the younger brother Jeh Wadia.
Preity Zinta's next release will be Yash Raj's Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. She was recently shooting for Rituparno Ghosh's The Last Lear with Amitabh Bachchan.
The Reliance chief Mukesh Ambani visited Tirumala along with his family on Sunday. He donated five big digital screens worth about 5 crore to the Tirumala Triupathi Devasthanams. The screen will be set up outside the temple and will screen all the sevas being performed insides the temple.
Mukesh also handed over the keys of a cottage for pilgrims constructed at a cost of 7 crore. He also agreed to fund the setting up spiritual schools in all districts of the state.
2006/12/5 17:02:18 Indian model-turned-actor John Abraham isn't bothered by stories about his rivalry with fellow actor Salman Khan, a newspaper reported Tuesday.
Abraham shares screen time with Khan in the movie ``Baabul'' or ``Parent's Home'' and there have been news reports about Khan making snide remarks about his co-star and a squabble during the making of the film.
``All I can do is brush it off with a smile. I really don't have time for all this,'' Abraham was quoted as saying in the Times of India. ``As far as I'm concerned, I'm very comfortable with everyone around me,'' he added.
There were no comments from Khan.
One of India's top models, Abraham, 33, started acting three years ago. Since then he has often been voted as one of Bollywood's sexiest stars in movie polls.
He has starred in several blockbuster movies since he struck fame in the 2004 hit ``Dhoom'' or ``Big Bang.'' Apart from ``Baabul,'' he is also currently starring in ``Kabul Express,'' where he plays a television journalist covering the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Both films will hit theaters later this month.
Priyanka Chopra tries to be 'friendly' with co-stars
Priyanka Chopra has been in the news for not being too friendly with her female colleagues. But she seems to be trying hard to change that image.
The news about her rivalry with Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone is well known. So, now she doesn't want her rivalry with Katrina Kaif to be known to the world. Apparently only for this, Priyanka is likely to appear with Kat in the Krissh sequel.
The buzz is that Hrithik Roshan wants Katrina in Krissh 2 for a role (Piggy Chops is already the main lead). And if sources are to be believed, Priyanka has not shown any discomfort in working with Katrina.
"Priyanka has never been the type who would object or comment about the cast chosen by the director or producer of a film," a source said. So in Krissh 2, we might see Katrina and Priyanka in the same frame.
The idea of casting Katrina struck Hrithik when he worked with her in Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara. Though Hrithik has not yet confirmed anything, but if the film has Katrina too in it, it will surely be an innovation as Priyanka doesn't like sharing screen space with any of her rival co- actresses.
Director Rohit Shetty may have pulled a casting coup of sorts by roping in arch-rivals Asin and Genelia D’Souza for his next venture Bol Bachchan.
Whatever reason may have prompted the move, the director is sure preparing himself to ward off many nervous moments when he will have to bear heat of the rivalry.
An industry source says, “It’s a known fact that Asin and Genelia are the closest competitors down South. So it won’t be wrong to expect fireworks when the two are pitted against each other in the same film.”
While Genelia has been in Bollywood for much longer, it’s Asin who has had huge hits like Ghajini and Ready to her credit.
Although down South, Genelia’s a big name who was also the original Ready girl. The rivalry between the two took a dramatic turn when Asin refused to see Genelia’s film to prepare for Ready citing that she didn’t need to.
However, when quizzed about the rivalry, Asin rubbished it. “It’s all in the mind of outsiders, but within the industry it’s just healthy competition,” she says.
No Asin, the audience is not “ready” to believe that.
Big B Amitabh Bachahan visited Tirumala and had darshan of Lord Venkateswara Swamy on Sunday. Amitabh arrived along with Anil Ambani and Amar Singh in a special chartered flight from Mumbai.
Amitabh Bachchan offered puja and placed the wedding invitation of Abhisekh and Aishwara Rai at the feet of the lord and prayed for a long and prosperous life for them. He later donated an amount of 51 lakhs for various schemes being run by the Devastahanam. Anil Ambani and Amar Singh also donated similar amounts to the TTD.
We have seen rivalry between heroes both in Tollywood and Bollywood. Even Kollywood is no exception. The heroines are no les when it comes to competition. Now all that is passé. The hottest thing doing the rounds in the industry today is the bitter rivalry between two item girls. Yes, we are talking bout the two hot item girls in Tollywood, Abhinayasri and the fast rising Mummaith Khan.
Abhinayasri is feeling threatened by the meteoric rise of Mummaith. And why not? Mummaith has in a very short span moved up the ladder, working in films with some of the top heroes. She is now giving sleepless nights to Abhinayasri.
Abhinyasri however dismisses all talk of Mummaith being hot and better than her. She has thrown a challenge to Mummaith. Come and dance with me in a film and let’s see who is hotter. She says that she can outdo Mummiath in both glamour and the dance department. This is one rivalry that is being keenly watched by the industry and cinegoers. If they both come together in a movie, what more can the audience ask for.
Among the most eligible girls in Bollywood, Preity Zinta looks like the one who might tie the nuptial knot next. It has been nearly two years since Preity and Ness Wadia (Bombay Dyeing heir) have been dating. The couple is often seen together in public, private functions and social dos.
Their relationship has withstood the test of time. During their courtship, there have been rumours of their split many times. There has also been grapevine that Preity does not get along with Ness’s mother Maureen Wadia well enough. But the ultimate test of their relationship came recently when former actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthy accused Preity of having an affair with her husband Shekhar Kapoor and claimed that Preity was responsible for breaking their marriage. Preity strongly denied Suchitra’s allegations.
Through all this thick and thin, Preity and Ness have stood by each other. The two were recently spotted together at the wedding of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. As for their own marriage, Preity and Ness are not willing to comment anything. Yes, a few weeks back, Preity did give a hint. She had said in an interview: “Get ready for a big announcement.”
She's changing her act for sure. Suddenly, she’s into absolutely new areas.. Indian Professional League cricket.. a clutch of movies which require her to be much more than a cool cutesy.. and there’s the dream of starting a sports school for women. Meanwhile all goes steady on the Ness Wadia front. So here’s Preity Zinta in a pep talk with Hiren Kotwani
All right, you have been discussing your IPL non-stop. But there’s a buzz that you got into IPL to squash the rumour that you had split with Ness Wadia.
What! Do you think I’d invest half of my life’s money just for that? If someone wants to start rumours, I don’t care. Why would I get others into IPL? I’d tell people to keep on gossiping if they want, but also to please see my cricketmatches.
There is also the rumour that you'll be getting married to Ness Wadia later this year or early next year.
That's too personal. If and when it happens, everyone will know about it. Like it's not cool to ask Aishwarya if she's pregnant. We're honourable people, leading an open life. I want to tell everyone not to come to me with this question. It's irritating to answer it for two-and-a-half years.
See Aishwarya again. First, she was hounded about marriage and now about having a child. Then it will be another child, then a scooter for the kid! Usko toh lynch kar diya hai! I don't want to be the lynched victim. If I don't give an answer, then there will be a story about a break-up. I've worked very hard for all the good things, so I don'twant anyone to undermine them.
"If and when my marriage happens, everyone will know about it. Like it's not cool to ask Aishwarya if she's pregnant. We're honourable people, leading an open life."Your association with the Indian Professional League cricket team came as a surprise.
It wasn't a surprise for me because we had been working on it. Since it was my first venture into another area, I wanted to be quiet about it in the beginning. What if nothing happened later? So, I waited till the bids opened. I also want to build a sports school. Now, this opportunity has come my way. I hope it opens more doors for women since cricket is a male-dominated sport.
The BCCI has the vision, this is just the beginning. Forgotten heroes and others will get more employment in sports again. I'm privileged and excited to be in the company of Mr Ambani, Mr Vijay Mallya and Shah Rukh Khan.. I'm the youngest.. a bit nervous too. I'm not that rich.. I've put in a lot of my money.. I hope it works. I need more support than I ever did in my life.
How much more of a cricket enthusiast have you become? I don't know all that much about cricket, I'm learning everyday. (Laughs) I know about boundaries and sixers and that is very important in a Twenty20 match, everything else doesn't matter. (laughs) Yesterday, I learnt the difference between a yorker and a bouncer.
"I didn't learn acting before I came into films, I picked it up along the way. I only wish Sachin Tendulkar was in my team.. but at the end of the day, we're all Team India." I didn't learn acting before I came into films, I picked it up along the way. I only wish Sachin Tendulkar was in my team.. but at the end of the day, we're all Team India.
Does the talk of politics and manipulations in the BCCI worry you? Please don't say politics or any negative things. I don't want any disadvantages.. of course, I don't mind the advantages. IPL is very well planned and structured. There's a transparency. Only a certain amount of money can be spent, no overspending. A rich team can't buy out another team.
You'll also be competing with Shah Rukh Khan? I started my career with Shah Rukh in Dil Se. Now I'm starting my cricket career with him in Mohali. If SRK was playing, then it would have meant competition.. we wish each other well. His team is the one I'll cheer for, after mine. (Laughs) We won't tear each other apart when our teams are playing on opposite sides.
Maniratnam produced ‘Guru’ on Madras Talkies banner. In this Hindi film, Abhishek Bachan and Aishwarya Rai are the hero and heroines.

As the Amitabh Bachchan-Shah Rukh Khan comparison rages on, there seems to be one more reason to compare.
Some reports say the Zee Television Network has roped in Bachchan to host a new game show to be aired on its new entertainment channel Zee Next, to upstage Star Television’s Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), which is now in its third season and being hosted by Khan.
The move by Zee, reported Merinews, is to compete with Star and though Zee is keeping the deal with Bachchan much of a secret, sources said the network has already got three proposals from Bachchan’s AB Corps, the new avatar of ABCL.
Though Bachchan was bound by Star with a contract that did not allow him to be part of any game show similar to KBC for any other network, the time period of the contract ended, making him free to undertake new assignments.
Though it’s not yet clear if the Bachchan-Khan rivalry has degenerated into a full-fledged war, but it has been out in the open now after Khan sent a point-to-point rebuttal to some recent remarks attributed to Bachchan.
The two biggest stars of Bollywood – one an ageing icon, the other the heartthrob of a young generation – are fighting a battle for popularity and subtle digs at each other have marked their rivalry during the past few months.
In a TV interview, when Khan was asked about Bachchan and the rivalry between the two, he gave a curt reply, saying: "That was your generation, this is mine."
Bachchan had also remarked that comparisons with a younger star only inspired him to act better so that Khan could imitate him. "I am quite good at what I do," Khan retorted.
Preity Zinta, the vivacious, dimple-cheeked Bollywood star, celebrates her 33rd birthday on Thursday with greater confidence in her abilities and demonstrating a little known business acumen with the recent bagging of the franchisee of the Mohali team in cricket's Indian Premier League.
Preity would have had a big do to mark the occasion had her professional commitments not come in the way, according to a source close to her.
However, she has ensured that the 'big day' in her life is not all work and no play. She will celebrate, but it will be a quiet one. Who are included in her private party's guest list is also kept under wraps to avoid media scrutiny.
But fans can be rest assured that Preity’s beau, Ness Wadia, the scion of the Wadia family who runs Bombay Dyeing, will be with her on her special day.
Professionally, after a decade in the industry, Preity is now bold enough to tread on uncharted territories with a rare confidence to ensure that she carves her own niche in Bollywood – of course, with an eye on Hollywood.
Preity will be seen in movies like Deepa Mehta's forthcoming venture, Heaven On Earth, and Jahnu Barua's Har Pal, movies that are a tad different from the usual Bollywood potboilers.
In both the movies – due for release in the first half of 2008 – Preity will surprise her fans and audiences alike, portraying far less glamorous roles than she has ever played in the past.
The two movies will present her in an image that is absolutely different from the bubbly image the mainstream Bollywood movies have given her.
So, glamour of cricket and de-glamorised roles in movies – is this the beginning of metamorphoses 2008 that Preity is experimenting with?
Self improvisation a key to happy life, says Asha Bhonsle
Self improvisation and reinvention of one's own abilities are the keys to a happy life, noted playback singer Asha Bhonsle said.
"One has to live life to its fullest and continuously work towards self improvising one's own abilities. Only then a human being can lead a long and happy life," Asha said on Wednesday at the inaugural edition of annual Silver Harmony Awards 2007, where 10 senior citizens were awarded for their exemplary contributions towards society.
"A stage comes when one starts feeling lonely, despite having children and grandchildren around. I too feel lonely sometimes. But I look towards reinventing myself by adding new styles to my singing. This keeps me focused and I keep moving in life," she said.
The awards have been instituted by NGO 'Harmony for Silvers Foundation', headed by Tina Ambani, the wife of ADAG Chairman Anil Ambani.
The ten award recipients included - Wipro chief Azim Premji (62), veteran actor A K Hangal (90), Ayesha Chelekkodan (87), Arvind Gupte (54), Ram Chander Sharma (87), Rehman Rahi (82), Deep Joshi (61), Ravinder Kumar (54, Shirish Nadkarni (57) and Chewang Norphel (72).
Mani Ratnam’s forthcoming film, Guru, is shrouded in secrecy. So much so, that its stars, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Vidya Balan have signed confidentiality contracts to not reveal any of the precious details.
Said to be inspired by the life of the late Dhirubhai Ambani, the film is the rags-to-riches journey of a common man into a visionary.
