Amitabh Bachan in Tamil Film

After Bhojpuri films, if the grapevine is to believe, Big B might just consider a request to do a cameo in a Tamil film called Aruvadai.

Not many know that Amitabh was approached to make a guest appearance in Rajnikanth’s super hit Sivaji, but due to non- availability of dates, things didn’t work out.

    Will Amitabh invite Sonia?

    2007/2/7 7:20:07

The suspense over whether Amitabh Bachan will invite the Congress President Sonia Gandhi for the wedding of his son Abhisekh with Aishwarya Rai continues. It needs no mention that the first lady of politics and the legend of Bollywood are not in talking terms.

Their relationship has soured over the years with Amitabh getting closer to Mulayam. And everyone knows that Sonia cannot stand Mulayam. Jaya Bachan is also an elected member of the Rajya Sabha backed by Samajwadi Party.

Amitabh and Rajiv Gandhi were best friend at one time. Now it remains to be seen if Amitabh forgets the past and invites Sonia Gandhi for the wedding. And whether Sonia will accept the invitation and attend the wedding, which is being hyped as the wedding of the year.

    Amitabh, Abhishek in Aakhri Mughal

    2007/5/9 10:41:56

If reports making the rounds in Bollywood are to be believed, filmmaker J P Dutta is planning to make a movie on the last Mughal king Bahadur Shah Zafar. Though Dutta had envisaged this project a long time back, he could never get things in place to make his movie titled Aakhri Mughal (The Last Moghul). And now, after making Umrao Jaan last year, Dutta seems to be in a mood for another period flick, for he is reviving the long-shelved Aakhri Mughal.

Sources say Dutta wants none other than Amitabh Bachan to play the aging king Bahadur Shah Zafar in the film. And since Dutta has cast Abhishek Bachan in every single movie since Refugee, the buzz is strong that Abhi will play Bahadur Shah's son Mirza Mughal in the film. Grapevine even has it that Aishwarya Rai will also be part of the film's cast!

If so happens, the movie will have three members of the Bachan clan!

Dutta wants to start his Aakhri Mughal soon because Ketan Mehta is thinking of making a movie each on Rani Laxmi Bai and Bahadur Shah Zafar.

Bachchan sees new chances in English movie

    2007/9/12 8:51:55

Working in English and simply growing old are offering new opportunities to movie icon Amitabh Bachan whose first English-language film, The Last Lear, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival this week.

Bachan, described on industry Web site www.imdb.com as "arguably India's greatest ever superstar," said making a film in English had brought back memories of school and college. An English-language film was different, but logical at the same time, given the role of English as a common language in India.

"It's always wonderful to experiment with something different," Bachan, who has 171 acting credits to his name, told Reuters in an interview the day after the sold-out Toronto premiere.

"At 65, you get an opportunity to experiment with all kinds of films and that's what's happening, and I am happy that there are people that want me to work with them, and it gives me the chance to do something different."

In The Last Lear, Bachan plays Harry, a reclusive stage actor who quotes Shakespeare with relish and who -- somewhat reluctantly -- is making his movie debut at the age of 65.

He stars alongside Preity Zinta, who is also acting in her first English-language film, as are others in the cast.

Director Rituparno Ghosh has chosen to add subtitles, even for a North American audience.

"I did it because we Indians speak English in various ways -- the same language can take various forms," said Ghosh. "And the tongues of the various communities of India may not be so easily comprehensible to a Western audience."

Bachan said the role of Harry, and the way he used Shakespeare's language to illustrate his points, had brought back memories of his own early acting days, including the role of Cassio in Shakespeare's Othello.

He named Hamlet as one role he has always wanted, but admitted that "at my age, I would probably be playing the ghost."

At just over two hours, The Last Lear is short by Indian standards, and there are none of the song and dance routines that form the usual highlights of a Bollywood extravaganza.

Bachan bristled at the idea that the new movie might be considered "Bollywood."

"We don't like that word," he said. "It was coined by some smart journalist and it just stuck, and now it's in the Oxford dictionary."

Amitabh, Vikram team up for Tamil film

    2006/10/9 14:52:09

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and veteran south Indian actor Vikram are to share the screen in a big budget Tamil film to be produced by Manickam Narayanan and ABCL.

Narayanan is the producer of the current Tamil hit "Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu" starring Kamal Haasan.

The yet untitled film is likely to be a bilingual venture with a Hindi version. Narayanan has reportedly held discussions with both Amitabh and Vikram.

The film will be a dream come true for both the stars.

On every visit to Chennai, Big B has expressed his desire to debut on the Tamil screen, according to industry sources.

He made a brief appearance in last year's Kannada blockbuster "Amruthadhare" - his first south Indian film.

Vikram, who got his first break years ago in "Ullasam", which was financed by ABCL, is excited about the idea of acting with Amitabh - his long-time idol.

Vikram has revelled in the role of an angry young man in many of his films - a role popularised by Amitabh in his younger days.

Although Amitabh has not acted in any Tamil movie, he is a familiar face in Tamil Nadu because of the Tamil version of the popular quiz show "Kaun Banega Crorepati".

'Kuchelan' – question raised by Srinivasan

2008/1/29 19:23:28 Srinivasan is a very happy man for the recognition he is now receiving through 'Kuchelan.' He wrote the screen play and directed the national award winning 'Sintha Nishtayaaya Syamala.' This was made into the less appealing version 'Chidambarathil Oru Appasamy' by Thankar Bachan.

Till date, Thankar has not acknowledged that 'Appasamy' is a remake of Srinivasan's film. In order to save money, he did not approach Srinivasan directly for the remake rights. He sent his assistant, as if for remaking for him, paid a few thousands for the remaking rights, but used it himself. Not only did he hide the matter about re-making, he also did not acknowledge that the story is Srinivasan's.

Srinivasan's 'Kadhaparayum Poll' is being re-made into 'Kuchelan' starring Rajini. Naturally the Tamil press is all out to speak to Srinivasan, who is happy that he is at last getting his due acknowledgement.

Big B, Rajini: No contest, all love

    2007/6/15 10:54:33

It was a moment when one icon spoke about another. On the eve of Sivaji's release superstar Amitabh Bachchan spoke to CNN-IBN about Rajinikanth and why he considers the Tamil superstar a wonderful human being.

“He is perhaps the most excellent example of what India and life is all about. I mean he comes from a very modest background. He was bus conductor, had a dream and joined Tamil cinema. So, look at the proportions that he has reached and how much he has achieved,” Bachchan said.

Fan frenzy has reached a crescendo across south India and world over with theaters booked months in advance for the release of the film. And according to Bachchan no Indian star has ever witnessed such a fan following.

“His latest film Sivaji is carrying massive reports and the economics of the whole thing is simply incredible. He is a very simple human being but the kind of adulation that is seen for him in our country is remarkable. No Indian star has ever experienced that. So, that speaks a lot because Hindi cinema seemingly is more prominent,” Bachchan said.

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth too spoke about the Big B rubbishing all reports of the comparison between the two actors.

“I don’t think we should be compared. He is an emperor and I am only probably a king. He is my inspiration and a role model for me. How can you compare Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth?” the Tamil superstar asked humbly.

Rajinikanth cleared the air on the Big B issue but left some other issues still for the world to guess like a stint in politics.

“I really don’t know about tomorrow but everything is in God’s hands,” Rajinikanth said when asked if he wanted to join politics.

    And the AB-SRK war continues

2006/12/6 19:27:16 What happens when two titans come face to face in the competitive arena in Bollywood? Fire works, ego clashes and a war of words is inevitable. Like the Amitabh Bachchan-Shah Rukh Khan war which was one of the biggest star wars first reported in July, 2005. It was alleged that whatever Amitabh did, Shah Rukh wanted to do the same, but bigger and better.

Even if it meant doing a remake of the Amitabh Bachchan hit Don or endorsing the same brands as Big B or working with the same banners, SRK did not shy away from the opportunity to match footsteps with the stalwart. With Shah Rukh Khan taking over the KBC mantle from Amitabh Bachchan, their war has reached another level. All this and more, when the two vehemently deny any such bad vibes.

    Bollywood producers eyeing Kollywood

2006/11/23 17:23:31 Bollywood film companies are eyeing Tamil films impressed by its all-round performance in recent times.

At least five of these companies - Ram Gopal Varma Films, Burmawallah Brothers, Baba Films, ABCL and U TV -have ventured into making Tamil films.

Burmawallah Brothers is a company formed by brothers Abbas-Mastan, who direct Hindi films. Now they have established this company to produce Tamil films only. The first Tamil film to be produced by this company is "Evan Yaaro" starring Madhavan and Sangeetha.

Ram Gopal Varma Films is making a Tamil film with Madhavan, Shreya Reddy and Isha Deol.

Baba Films' "Nenjirukkum Varai" features Naren.

U TV 's Tamil venture is named "Yavarum Nalam". Madhavan has been selected to play the lead role in this film to be directed by Vikram Kumar. U TV is also taking up three more Tamil ventures in association with director Ameer.

Amitabh Bachchan's ABCL, which had already one Tamil film ("Ullasam") to its credit, is planning to produce another with Vikram in the lead.

Bollywood producers have set eyes on Tamil films because in terms of box-office collections and profits, Tamil films rank next only to Hindi films in overseas markets. For instance, in America and London, Kamal Hasaan's "Vettaiyadu Vilayadu", Ajith's "Varalaru" and "Vallavan" are doing as well as Hindi "Don" and "Janeman".

The only big-budget Tamil film produced this year is "Vettaiyadu Vilayadu". The budgets of most of the other Tamil films are less than Rs. 4 crore

Tamil films is becoming an attractive destination for film production. This is attributed to Tamil films' enjoying good overseas markets, low production costs, Government's package of tax and other concessions, state-of-the art technology and speedy execution of projects

U TV chief Rani Screwala is reportedly told media persons that Tamil film directors are completing even big-budget films in six months and commended the commitment and dedication of Tamil artistes and technicians and their enviable work culture.
