Author, sex worker is now an actress

Nalini Jameela, a 53-year-old sex worker, has been using make-up to attract customers since 1978, but she donned the grease paint on Thursday to act in an English documentary film titled Sex, Lies and a Book.

The 28-minute documentary, based on a book by Jameela, is being produced jointly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT). Sanjeev Sivan is the film's director.

"The shooting for the docu-drama has begun and I am really excited because we have given a totally different treatment, which is unlike the usual documentary," said Sivan, who is ace cinematographer Santhosh Sivan's younger brother.

"I was asked by the producers to do this film and I felt it was a great theme for a docu-drama because I read her book, which sold like hot cakes in Kerala," added Sivan.

The film has been compartmentalised into three spans of Jameela's life - her childhood, her youth and her present life.

A 13-year-old girl and 35-year-old woman play the first two phases of the sex worker's life while Jameela plays herself in the current phase.

"She speaks on camera on important happenings in her life and we re-create it and I feel this is going to be a great product," added Sivan.

Jameela, who is based in Kozhikode in north Kerala, has been coordinator of the Kerala Sex Workers Forum since 2001 and is also the live wire of Firm - the apex body of five non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Jameela has no qualms about her profession. She currently stays with her daughter and enjoys spending time with her grand daughter.

Jameela is excited about working in the documentary.

"I have not done acting before so I don't know how I would be able to act. I'll tell you about my experience in a few days time. I never dreamt that I would be able to act in a film," Jameela said..

"I am too pre-occupied with work among the sex workers, so I get very little time to practice my profession. But I make it a point to have at least three sessions a month with clients of mine," said Jameela.

Jameela's book in Malayalam Oru Laingyikathozhilaliyude Atma Katha (The life of a sex worker) released last year and was a great hit among readers.

"That book sold 13,000 copies. I, along with five others, have come out with a second book titled Njan Laingyikathozhilali (I am a sex worker). It has sold 6,000 copies. This book is now being translated into Gujarati, Bengali and Tamil," added Jameela.

The film will be shot in and around Kerala's capital and is likely to be completed in a week's time.

"I insisted on playing Madhuri. Koi connect hai (some connection is there)... I don't know what it was. But I instantly empathized with Madhuri's responsibilities towards her large family," Veena said.

"Maybe because I come from a family of five daughters and one son. But I understand what it feels like to be a woman in a male-dominated society. I've always supported myself, been on my own since adulthood," she noted.

Veena spent hours with Madhuri to know about her dual life.

"In the daytime she's a normal middle-class girl. In the night she puts on her burqa and goes to work in the red-light area, just like any normal working girl," Veena added.

"I loved the dignity that Madhuri brings to her life and her work. I hope I am able to convey the same dignity in my performance," Veena stated.

"Who cares about sex workers? I am appalled by the way they live in the red-light areas, not just in India but across Asia. These women deserve a much better life," felt Veena.

    Rescue operation in Cheli begins

The rescue operation to save the 33 workers who were trapped in a gold mine that is half a mile below the surface, since last 69 days finally begins on Wednesday morning in the presence of Cheli President Sebastian Pinera. Rescue operation specialists and engineers has been continuously working for the last 69 days, drilling a parallel hole to the mine and making other arrangements. Cheli President Sebastian regularly visits the spot to supervise the entire rescue operation from the day one. A steel capsule- container that has been specially made for this purpose was used to bring out the workers from the mine. It takes around one hour to bring out each worker from the golden trap.

The first worker was safely Florencio Avalosy brought out on Wednesday afternoon and the President Sebastian who was eagerly waiting outside has received and fondly hugs him. Rescued worker wore a helmet and sunglasses to protect himself from the glare of bright lights. He smiled broadly as he emerged and hugged his sobbing 7-year-old son, Bairon, and wife.

A second miner, Mario Sepulveda Espina, was pulled to the surface about an hour later. His shouts heard even before the capsule surfaced. After hugging his wife, Elvira, he jubilantly handed souvenir rocks from his underground prison to laughing rescuers. Then he jumped up and down as if to prove his strength to everyone before the medical team took him into a triage unit.

From then, every one hour one worker at a time brought out safely in the steel capsule specially made for this purpose.

This is the most horrifying accident in the mines history of world and the most successful rescue operation also. All the workers who spent in the dark for the last 69 days were safe and being lifted out one by one. The last worker who trapped inside the mine will have his turn after 24 hours from now, since the rescue operation need to be carried with utmost caution and in a very slow pace.

"Commercial sex worker" becomes Mammooty's heroine

    2007/12/6 4:55:36

Recently, a film was released in Tamil named 'Ammuvaagiya Naan'. This was about a commercial sex worker and how her life takes a turn for the better when a progressive-minded writer falls in love with her.

Bharati, whose mother happens to be from Kerala, had played the lead role. Though she had acted in couple of films in Telugu before, this film was almost a relaunch for her. Thanks to its controversial story and extreme glamour (with all the unnecessary cleavage shows and wet white shirts), the film made profits at the box office.

The industry appreciated her courage to accept such controversial roles. The film's hero Parthiban was so irked by the popularity she got from it that he has now sworn not to act in such "heroine-oriented" subjects!

Now, she has decided to switch to Malayalam and is going to become the heroine of none other than Mammooty himself!

    Rowling's boots on auction

2011/9/20 9:40:50 A "Harry Potter" fan is set to auction the boots that author J.K. Rowling wore while writing the first book of the series.

Emily Waldo was just a 10-year-old student when she wrote to the novelist for a school project.

She asked Rowling to answer a shoe questionnaire. But she was stunned when Rowling also sent her a pair of well-worn black boots she had worn while drafting "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", reports dailystar.co.uk.

Waldo is now selling off the shoes and plans to use the funds to help pay for her college education. She would also donate some of the money to her former school and a cancer charity.

Waldo, now 22, recalls: "I walked into the school office where there was a package addressed from England with about eight stamps in the corner. I knew exactly what it was. I vividly remember skipping up the steps to my classroom with a smile from ear to ear. I couldn't believe it. I had the author of Harry Potter's boots!"

"I read the questionnaire aloud but her handwriting was a little difficult for me to decipher. And it took me years to understand how witty it actually was. I am indebted to J.K. Rowling for providing me with an experience that has enriched my life."

Celina, Zayed say goodbye to 'Hello'

    2007/2/5 15:08:48

Actor-turned-director Atul Agnihotris forthcoming project Hello hit a bump when Celina Jaitley and Zayed Khan walked out of the film. The movie is based on author Chetan Bhagats famous book One Night @ A Call Centre which is the story of six youngsters working on a night shift in a call centre.

The films story is set in one night only. Atul had previously said that Zayed and Celinas roles in the film were tailor-made for them. But now the two actors have opted out of the project.

Apparently, their departure was not prompted by any disagreement over the movies script or concept, but by date problems. Because the movie is set in a single night, Atul wanted to shoot the film in a single schedule to maintain spontaneity.

But Zayed and Celina had other projects in their kitty and could not spare the required dates. Now, Atull Agnihotri has replaced the two with Sohail Khan and Isha Koppikar.

Hello will have Salman Khan telling the story from the authors perspective. The film is about a one-night conversation with God.

Apparently the newbie has worked in two films with Aamir as a child artist already, and has tried hard to imbibe his extreme professionalism, so much so that for his role in Traffic Signal, Kunal has often traveled to Dharavi to pick up the nuances of the local goons. And his effort has been much applauded by Bhandarkar, who says, He used to then come and discuss it all with me. Hes a very hard worker. The guy surely believes: Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.
