decades of playing the conventional heroine, Bollywood actresses are increasingly making their presence felt in the hitherto male preserve of action films.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Dhoom 2, Sushmita Sen in Samay and Priyanka Chopra in Don came into their own in action sequences - carrying out intricate stunts with practised ease.
Chopra, whose dexterity will be on display in the action film Drona, goes on the defensive when asked about her liking for such roles.
"If we can pull off dramas, comedies - then why can't we do action films?" the actress said.
"I think it's very wrong to think that only actors can do action films and stunts and a woman can't do it. There is definitely a risk when you do action sequences but if you are properly trained then why not?"
The trend sees actresses performing stunts for perhaps the first time since Mary Evans, better known as Fearless Nadia, wowed Indian audiences in the first half of the 20th century.
Other actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Esha Deol and Deepika Padukone are also experimenting with the genre and are prepared to take the risk of injury.
"I have simply fallen in love with action, it excites me a lot," Aishwarya Rai Bachchan told reporters at an event in Mumbai.
The 34-year-old wielded the sword for a sequence in Jodhaa Akbar and also did several stunts for the Hollywood film The Last Legion.
"After I got a taste of it, I just can't wait to do action stunts again and again. It is so exciting to do sword fights or for that matter jumping off from a cliff."
But some commentators feel that Bollywood actresses are being forced to experiment with the action genre as films are still written keeping the hero in mind. In fact, films like Chak De India and Bheja Fry did not even have a leading lady.
"We are in an era when the role of the conventional Hindi heroine is fast getting marginalised," Bollywood historian Derek Bose says.
"Today it is either a comedy or an action flick that can assure you a box-office draw. If an actress has to find employment she has to choose between the two."
‘Ra.One’ to be turned into a playstation game by Sony!
Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film ‘Ra.One’ has been in the news ever since the shooting of the film began. It is a sci-fi flick and SRK has apparently worked on a product that hasn’t been created in Bollywood before.
The latest news is that apparently Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has partnered with the Ra.One franchise to create a PlayStation game based on the movie – ‘RA.ONE’.
RA.ONE’ stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead roles. The video game version of the movie will be called ‘RA.ONE – The Game’ and has been developed exclusively on key PlayStation platforms of PS2 and PS3 (through PSN download).
The game is currently being developed by the experts of the game development team at SCEE based out of London, UK.
SRK has himself developed the story line of the game so that it helps audiences relate to the characters.
The game is being looked at as a prequel to the film which will enable fans and viewers to establish an intrinsic connection with the leading characters in the film. It will also introduce people to the super – powers various characters have in the film.
Atindriya Bose, Country Manager – PlayStation said to a daily, “We have always wanted to bring Bollywood IPs on PlayStation platform as the way of connecting to Indian audience. RA.ONE has the right mix of action, environment and imagination that is required to make a good PlayStation game, and with Shah Rukh Khan immense passion and understanding of PlayStation games, we have chanced upon a very unique opportunity of a great game with Indian IP.”
“The game provides an opportunity to the players to play as the key characters of the film: RA.ONE or G.One. Beyond these two characters, a few other key characters will also be included in the game. The film characters have been replicated closely for looks and animation and use the actual voice-overs from Shah Rukh Khan”, he added.
‘RA.ONE - The Game` is expected to be let out in the market somewhere in September 2011. It’s release will be planned in such a way that it compliments the actual film’s release.
Well, this is a newer dimension of growth for a Bollywood film!
It is quite common for heroes to romance with two heroines in a film. On some rare occasions we have seen even three heroines in a film.
However for superstar Rajnikanth everything has to be grand. So for his new film titled ‘Rana’ director KS Ravi Kumar is planning to rope in as many as six heroines. Even Rajnikanth is said to have okayed this idea.
The names of all the six heroines will be announced shortly.

To know that this miniature version of me in the game is reaching to a wide audience gets me very excited. Rimmi feels that a good game of squash gives her a complete workout and improves her concentration levels too.
There are so many ways to get that slim and sexy bod.
For the Bong bombshell Rimmi, crash diets and work-outs are only part of the game. The gal’s an enthusiastic squash player. She loves the sport and at the end of a long, tiring day all she pines for is a good game of squash.
“The game requires high concentration power and high energy levels, and that’s what attracts me to it the most,” says Rimmi. We hope you’re tracking the numbers game in showbiz. If you find competition around, just squash it. Game for it, girl?
Many heroines after a long stint in Tollywood quit the scene after they tie the knot. But for some it is only for a short period. Simran is one example. But for others it is a second innings, which is both rewarding and satisfying.
They turn to the small screen and are making a mark with their experience and talent. Raadhika is the first in the genre. Then comes Ramya Krishna, Raasi, Laya etc. While Raadhika has set up her own production house Raadan TV, the others are content at hosting game shows.
Ramya Krishna emboldened by the success of the game shows has now set up her own production and is hosting a show every Sunday on a private TV channel. The show invites one top Tollywood actor to the studio and participants get to talk to the actor. The participants also get a chance to win fabulous prizes.
So don’t be surprised if big stars start making a beeline to the small screen. But what is surprising is that only heroines are entering the small screen, so far no hero worth the name has opted to take this route.

Jr. NTR is one of the most popular and successful heroes in Tollywood. He turned 24 the other day. He has given many memorable hits in Telugu and at one time was even said to be in contention for the top slot. He has so far acted in 14 films. However, his heroines do not move with him closely nor do they talk about him.
The reason is this. It is alleged that NTR is a loner and he prefers to keep his own company while on the sets. He is so involved with himself that the heroines prefer to keep to themselves. He is not known to interact closely with the leading ladies. Some of the heroines even allege that NTR is full of himself as he has a very big ego.
Hockey fever seems to have caught on bigtime in Bollywood. Recently, while shooting for an ad film, Abhishek Bachchan grabbed a hockey stick and played a game with Bosco, of Bosco-Ceasar fame. However, this time they converted the studio into a playground.
Bosco says, "Yes, we randomly began playing the game. During a shoot-break, Abhishek just called for hockey equipment and called all of us to play. We played for over an hour. The hockey equipment was part of the props used for the ad film. We just got together and enjoyed every bit of the game. I think it was a nice way to unwind. Although we played for fun this time, I think we should take up this game seriously. Going by the great time we had, I am sure we guys will play it again. "
Abhishek and Bosco go back a long way. "I first met Abhishek on the sets of Shararat for the first time, and hit it off instantly. Once we packed up early and Abhishek called for some cricket gear. We played for 4-5 hours at a stretch then. We have also played table tennis with him in the past. I have worked with him for many films including Dus, Kuch Na Kaho, Bluff Master and Bunty Aur Babli. Ceasar and I have been sportspersons so we are always on for a good game."

Egos are as large in Bollywood as the lavish multi-crore productions themselves. The star wars in the tinsletown just got a little more exciting, when an unexpected player entered the frame.
Aamir Khan may be best known as Bollywood's Mr Perfectionist but of late he has turned into Mr Competitive.

And that's not all, when asked that if he had a chance to interview Shah Rukh Khan what will his first question be, the actor said, "Thats a tricky question. I would ask Shah Rukh how does it feel to be second after Aamir?"
This seemed to be becoming a case of Khan v/s Khan, but does this confine to Bollywood or has it extended to cricket as well?
According to Aamir it's not true at all. "No no, not at all, it is a rumour. I am not buying anything and I have nothing to do with ICL. I love cricket and I love to watch the game," he said.

Don’t read any meaning into this. Lara Datta and Celina Jaitley are working together in a couple of films. Lara says that Celina is a wonderful woman and a great co-star. The two of them are having a whale of a time together.
The friendship between the two is a welcome sign, especially when no two heroines in Bollywood are known to stand one another. The cat fight between some of the heroines needs to be seen to know the welcome change we see between Lara and Celina. May their tribe increase.
