Excited to entertain India: Indo-Canadian porn star

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS) She was born Karen Malhotra but is proud of her "alter ego" -- that of world-famous porn star Sunny Leone. In India to participate in "Bigg Boss 5", the Indo-Canadian says she is not just upbeat about spicing up the controversial reality show, but also about entertaining her Indian fans for the first time.

"I've been to India a few times. I was here in February and again came in May 2008... so I have been visiting the country on and off. But this is my first time here as an entertainer and I'm looking forward to a positive feedback from all my lovely fans," Leone told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The 30-year-old, who landed in Mumbai Thursday night, will enter the "Bigg Boss 5" house Saturday night. But her entry will be shown on Colors channel Monday. Surprising, as it may seem, Leone claims she has been following this season of the show ever since it started.

"I've been seeing this show, episode by episode since Oct 2! It's really exciting, so I am more excited about meeting everybody in the house. While watching the show, it was a little hard to picture myself in there, but I think I will settle in well once I am there," she said.

Born to Punjabi parents in Ontario, the bisexual girl worked at a bakery before entering the pornography scene. She changed her name for safety.

"Sunny was one of my favourite nicknames. So I changed my name to it for safety reasons, for the fear of what I do. Not that I am scared, but this is just my alter ego and I love my alter ego," she said.

Leone was named Penthouse Pet of the Year in 2003 and she also signed a contract with adult video production company Vivid Entertainment. After featuring in several videos and adult films, she was named among 12 top porn stars in 2010 by Maxim magazine.

No wonder she is hoping to cause fireworks in "Bigg Boss 5"!

"I think the very fact that I am showing up on a show like this will make for a jaw-dropping moment for many people inside and outside the house. But I guess it would be interesting to see who knows me and who doesn't in the 'Bigg Boss' house.

"It would be fun to see how the guys react... because when most guys see me, they don't know what to do with themselves," she said nonchalantly.

Nevertheless, she admits: "I am as intimidated about their reactions as anybody would be."

Leone's family moved to the US when she was 13, but the curvaceous beauty can "speak and understand" a bit of Hindi and Punjabi in her 'pardesi' accent.

"Mujhe aati hai thodi bahut Hindi aur Punjabi! (I know a bit of Hindi and Punjabi)," she said, in her jetlagged, tired voice.

While in "Bigg Boss 5", Leone wants to do what she loves doing in India -- "eating Indian food".

She also hopes to try her hand at cooking. But even as many await to see what an internationally-known porn star has to offer Indian family audiences, one wonders what all Leone would do to spice up the already spicy show.

Indo-Canadian porn star to spice up 'Bigg Boss 5'

    2011/11/17 20:49:47

New Delhi, Nov 17 (IANS) If it was Pamela Anderson who raised the mercury levels in reality show "Bigg Boss 4", this season Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone is set to add fuel to the controversial show by making an entry Saturday.

"Sunny is coming down especially for the show and will enter (Bigg Boss's house) on November 20," a source from the channel Colors confirmed to IANS.

The 30-year-old, whose real name is Karen Malhotra, will land in Mumbai Thursday night.

Born to a Punjabi family in Ontario, Leone has appeared in various reality shows in the US, and was named among the world's top 12 porn stars by fashion magazine Maxim in 2010.

Leone was also approached by acclaimed Bollywood director Mohit Suri for his film "Kalyug", a film about the growing pornography industry. However, the role was ultimately essayed by model Deepal Shaw.

For the ongoing, fifth season of "Bigg Boss", there was buzz that international pop star Shakira or boxer Mike Tyson might join the show. But with news of Leone's entry, the speculations seem to have been put to rest.

Whether the adult star will be a long-term participant or a guest is still not sure.

"We can't confirm whether she will stay for long or just for two-three days. All we can say is she is coming to participate in 'Bigg Boss'," the source added.

When Pamela came to the show last year, it made for a jaw dropping moment for many. But it will be interesting to see how the mixed gag bag of the aggressive and argumentative celebs like Akashdeep Saigal, Amar Upadhyay, Siddharth Bharadwaj, Pooja Missra, Shraddha Sharma and Mahek Chahal in "Bigg Boss" will react to a porn star's entry in the show.

Its lehenga-choli for porn star Sunny Leone

    2011/11/20 19:21:48

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) Contrary to her image, Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone chose to make her entry into the "Bigg Boss" house in traditional Indian attire.

The 30-year-old, who was born as Karen Malhotra, wore a heavily embroidered lehanga-choli and accessorised it with 'mang tika'. She made her entry into the house Saturday in a "doli", carried by eight men.

She also chose to dance on an Indian track "Chaliya Chaliya" from the movie "Tashan" after stepping out from "doli".

Vida's exit from the "Bigg Boss 5" had left the contestants sad, hopefully Sunny will lift the mood of the inmates.

Sunny's entry will be shown on Colors channel Monday.

    Russell Peters Interview on B'Wood-H'Wood

    2011/9/24 6:13:39

Here's one man who is not in love with Hindi films and its jhatkas. But Canadian Russell Peters, who is of Anglo-Indian origin and has been an international standup comedian for 23 years, says the confluence of Bollywood and Hollywood must grow.

Ontario-native Peters, who has worked in Akshay Kumar's Indo-Canadian venture "Breakaway", was here in India to promote "Speedy Singhs", the Hindi version of the movie, when IANS caught up with him.

"Collaborations between India and the West are going to be fruitful. The love affair of Bollywood and Hollywood ought to grow and I think 'Speedy Singhs' is a good move from both the sides.

"We are in a time now where we do not have boundaries or any walls separating the two industries. Thanks to the internet, everybody can see everything. The reach has become global for every artist. It's just a matter of time before people decide and consolidate the two. Also, there is no reason why Indians in India and Indians abroad, the NRIs, can't do something together," he said.

The 40-year-old, who was born in Canada to Anglo-Indian parents, feels it is advisable for NRIs to come and get a taste of modern India, which has gone through several changes over the years.

"It's a good opportunity for Indians who are born and raised abroad to come back and get a reality check of what India is like now. And India today is not the same India that it was 10-15 years ago. It's way miles ahead of what we think it is. I also feel people here are way more smarter than people in the West. They are way more in tune with the rest of the world," he added.

Peters has been entertaining global audiences through his stand-up acts. He is now looking forward to receiving a star on Canada's Walk of Fame. It will be inducted Oct 1 in Toronto.

"I have earned my place and now I am getting my due recognition with being honoured by the star at Walk of Fame in Canada when I go back home. To be honoured with something like this and to be recognized, not as Indo-Canadian but as a Canadian, is a pretty big deal," he said, flashing a big smile.

Peters, who is known for his observational comedy about communities and culture around the world, says he finds Bollywood "useless", but admits he is in love with the country's entertainment capital, Mumbai.

"I don't follow, nor do I want to follow, Bollywood. I've no time for Bollywood. I don't care about Bollywood at all and I don't even want to do any film. I don't like the Bollywood jhatkas and matkas that they call it - the singing and dancing and also the dramatic crying," he said without hesitation.

Raise an eyebrow at that, and he retorts: "It's my opinion! Obviously there are billions who like and love them, but I have never seen a Bollywood film in my life. I have refused doing it earlier and will do so in future."

"But I love India. I have been here a couple of times. India is one place in the world that I see as very comfortable, and honestly Mumbai is the one city that I see I could fit in, I could live in. I love Mumbai," he said.

Peters kickstarted his career in acting with "Show Me The Funny" in 1997 and has since starred in films like "Lord Have Mercy" and "Comedy Now" among others.

"Breakaway" is the first film where he has worked in an Indian production with an Indian star-cast, featuring Anupam Kher, Vinay Virmani, Hollywood actress Camilla Belle and Gurpreet Ghuggi.

'Lucky to have Akshay uncle's support'

    2011/9/20 11:07:11

Mumbai, Sep 20 (IANS) Actor-producer Akshay Kumar took time off from the shooting of "Joker" to promote his first Indo-Canadian venture "Speedy Singh". Vinay Virmani, who is debuting with the movie, says he is lucky to have the Bollywood star's support.

Akshy visited Golden Temple in Amritsar and joined Vinay's parents and sister and co-star Camilla to pray for the film's success.

"I'm very lucky to have Akshay uncle's support. He's a role model. But more than that he is someone who understands Hindi commercial cinema. That's where I want to be," said Vinay, who is Toronto-based businessman Ajay Virmani's son.

"Speedy Singh", which was earlier titled "Breakaway", is Akshay's first Indo-Canadian film. His production company Hari Om Entertainment and First Take Entertainment have co-produced the film which also stars Russell Peters, Camilla Belle and Anupam Kher.

Directed by Robert Lieberman, the film is about ice hockey and Akshay makes a special appearance in it.

"I'm completely bowled over by how welcome I've been made to feel in Bollywood and India. Whether it's Akshay Uncle, who's family, or Harbhajan Singh, they've been very supportive and have gone out of their way to support me," said Vinay.

The newcomer says he grew up in a miniature Bollywood.

"In Toronto, we always had guests from Bollywood. And I grew up surrounded by stars. I speak fluent Punjabi and Hindi. And yes, I am hoping for a career in Hindi cinema.

"Bollywood was always on my mind from the time I was a child. Then I sat down to write the story of what eventually became 'Speedy Singh'. A lot of what you see of the young Punjabi guy's struggle to make a place for himself in the film is taken from my own life," said Vinay.

    Shakeela is now 'reformed'!

2008/4/16 18:03:59 It came as a big shock when the queen of sleaze and the undisputed and unrivalled porn star in south India, the one and only Shakeela quit acting in Malayalam films. The films were actually soft porn blue films masquerading as mainstream cinema.

She later moved to Tollywood and appeared in some films in roles that required her to replay some of her acts from Malayalam movies. However Shakeela has now more or less stopped acting, but for an occasional appearance. Even in her rare appearances, she is not doing any vulgar scenes but playing some very clean and respectable roles.

In Lakshmiputhrudu and in Kalidasu, she was seen fully covered from head to toe, either in saris or in salwar kameezes. In Lakshmiputrudu, she played the role of a receptionist at an Ayurvedic clinic. In Kalidasu, Shakeela played the role of a MLAs wife.

    Water Oscar Bound from Canada

    2006/9/23 16:32:40

Deepa Mehtas Water is headed to the Oscars but no it is not Indias entry but rather Canadas official entry to the Oscars. Since the producer of the film is Canadian, it became Canadas entry. Director Deepa Mehta was elated with the development and so was actor Seema Biswas who was also part of the films cast.

I am very happy though I would have wanted it to be Indias entry definitely. The setting was in India as was the whole star-cast but since it was produced by a Canadian, so it belongs to Canada. But I thank God for the opportunity and I hope the film does well for itself, said Seema.

Deepa Mehtas Water stars John Abraham, Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas in pivotal roles.

    Laugh away your Indo-Pak blues

    2007/6/29 8:47:46

Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik and Satish Shah three men with great comic timing will be seen together in director Shashi Ranjan's comic caper Dhoom Dhadaka, which is also an Indo-Pak collaboration.

This is film will do wonders for the Indo-Pak relationship because when you laugh together there is much more warmth, says Kher.

The film also introduces 24-year-old newcomer Mallick Zack to Bollywood, who was selected through a nationwide talent hunt in Pakistan.

Due to lack of better opportunities across the border, Zack says he has been trying hard for a big break in the Hindi film industry. Of course, I got lucky. Thank god for that. I always wanted to be an actor and God has been kind, says Zack.

Meanwhile, Ranjan says that good talent will always get a chance in India.

I guess co-productions are going to be the future of films. Also good talent is always welcome in India. I think that the insecurity which Pakistan government has should go away with such films, says Ranjan.

So, for now it seems with Dhoom Dhadaka, laughter is the best medicine to India and Pakistan's problems.

Bopanna-Qureshi lose tense opener in World Tour Finals

2011/11/21 19:13:15 London, Nov 21 (IANS) India's Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi lost to third seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor 6-7(2), 6-4, 9-11 in a gripping Group B round-robin match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

The Canadian-Belarusian pair, who are making their team debut at the season finale at The O2 in London, improved their win-loss record 43-19 with the victory here Sunday night. Both players are former champions - Mirnyi in 2006 (w/Bjorkman) and Nestor in 2007 (w/Knowles), 2008 and 2010 (w/Zimonjic).

Mirnyi and Nestor took 2-0 and 4-2 leads in the first set, but Bopanna and Qureshi worked their way back with breaks off the Nestor serve. Mirnyi saved one set point at sudden-death deuce at 4-5, then the Belarusian-Canadian duo took early control of the tie-break to clinch the 47-minute opener.

After Qureshi recovered from 0/40 in the second game, 'The Indo-Pak Express' grew in confidence and broke Nestor's serve for a third time a 3-2 lead in the second set. They maintained their advantage, by hitting 77 per cent of their first serves into court, to take the encounter to a Match tie-break.

In a tense finale, Bopanna ripped a forehand return winner past a net-rushing Nestor to open up a 3-1 lead in the Match tie-break. They went onto lead 6-3, before Mirnyi and Nestor started their comeback to level the score. Bopanna and Qureshi powered their way to 8-6, but Mirnyi and Nestor gained parity.

At 8-9, Qureshi saved one match point with a second serve ace out wide. But Mirnyi hit a finely placed lob winner for a 10-9 lead. Nestor closed out with a second serve ace to complete an eventful match in one hour and 41 minutes.

Bopanna and Qureshi had won previous meetings against Mirnyi and Nestor at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in April and at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris last week. The pair drops to a 38-24 season record, highlighted by three titles.

Naseer to star with Brazilian superstar

    2007/6/11 10:03:08

India and Brazil are set to tango in a cross-cultural film spanning three continents - the first Indo-Brazilian joint venture - which will star versatile Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah and Brazilian superstar Sonia Braga.

"Physical distance between India and Brazil can only be bridged by more people-to-people contacts. Films can act as a great emotional connector," India's ambassador to Brazil Hardeep Singh Puri told here.

"One of the first films made after the two countries signed a pact in the area of audio-visual co-production will star Naseerduddin Shah and Sonia Braga. It should make an impact," Puri said.

Braga is a living legend in Brazil and is better known abroad for her starring role in "Kiss of the Spiderwoman".

The co-production agreement should spur more such films as the pact provides for fiscal and tax incentives for those wishing to produce films with Indo-Brazilian themes, he said.

The agreement, which was signed during the visit of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to India early this week, will enable Brazilian companies to work with Indian companies to outsource work in different spheres of film production, including special effects, graphics and animation work.

The film, tentatively titled "Tamarindo", tells the story of a Brazilian journalist who goes to Goa in search of his father and dramatises a web of themes revolving around homecoming, belonging and the tortured quest for roots.

The film, to be shot in India, Portugal and Brazil, will be directed by Kolkata-born Indranil Chakravarty and Brazilian film producer Ana Cristina Costa e Silva, whose love for India is reflected in the name of her company - Dharma Filmes e Producoes.

The joint production agreement is uplifting news for film producers from India in search of exotic locales, which Brazil with miles of beaches and virgin coastline abounds in. "Dhoom 2", starring Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu, was shot in Brazil.

India reached the finals of the 20-day tournament easily, defeating the Italian team 74-15 in their semi-final match played at the flood-lit multi-purpose stadium here Friday evening.

But the big upset was in the second semi-final match between Pakistan and Canada late Friday. The Canadian side finally won 44-39 in a closely fought match.

The aggressive Canadian side kept up the pressure on the Pakistani side all through the game with both teams locked in a neck and neck fight. At half time, both teams were at 20-20 points.

The Pakistani side, which was the runners up in the first edition of the tournament last year, was expected to reach the finals this time also but the Canadian side, which also comprised Punjabi-origin youth settled in the country, got the better of them.

The final match of the men's Kabaddi, in which the winner team takes home the prize money of Rs.2 crore and the runner-up takes Rs.1 crore, will be played at industrial city Ludhiana's Guru Nanak Dev stadium Sunday evening.

In the women's section, in which four teams are participating for the first time, hosts India trounced the US team 57-7 in the last league match Friday evening.

Both teams have already reached the finals of the women's event. The finals will also be played in Ludhiana Sunday.

The India women's team overcame the trauma of Thursday evening's accident in which their team bus caught fire in an accident with an Army truck near Bathinda town.

The drivers of the bus and a Punjab Police gypsy piloting the bus were killed in the accident.

Some of the women team members also received injuries and burns in the incident as people broke the bus window-panes to rescue them.

Shakeela back to old sexy ways!

    2007/7/4 13:42:53

Shakeela was once the queen of soft porn films in India. Her films were also dubbed into many languages. Today, she is a well known name in Indian cinema but she seems to be in dilemma at the moment whether to take up glamour roles or not. Well, she seems to have once again fallen back to old ways of flesh show.

This sex bomb got recognition from the public only after her Malayalam hit film Kinarathumbikal. She entered Malayalam cinema at a time when the business was dipping low but her films managed to do very well at the box-office.
