Fireworks at Mumbai police Diwali function

Mumbai's men in khakhi had a rare treat when Bollywood stars showed up at the Mumbai police Diwali function.

The function, Jalwa, was organised by Cineyug Entertainment and was one of the most star-studded nights in this year's calendar.

Some of the highlights were Diya Mirza's performance on the number 'Kehna hi Kya' from the controversial Mani Ratnam film, Bombay, Kavita Krishnamoorthy's rendition of the wildly popular '80s hit 'Hawa Hawai', and Emraan Hashmi's dance performances on Himesh Reshammiya's numbers.

The star quotient touched an all-time high with the presence of Bachchans, including new bahu Aishwarya, and King Khan.

But even as Shah Rukh Khan stepped into the venue, minutes before his Om Shanti Om performance, the Bachchans decided it was time to leave, setting tongues wagging - yet again - about the purported cold vibes between the superstars.

    Diwali comes back to Tirumala

2007/11/8 17:44:23 The residents of Tirumala are celebrating Diwali in true spirit this year. The earlier TDP government had banned the lighting up fireworks on Tirumla after the naxal attack on TDP chief and the then chief minister Chnadra Babu Naidu in 2003.

The residents of Balaji nagar made an appeal to the TTD authorities in this connection. And the TTD reacted favorably to their request. So the residents of Balaji nagar at Tirumala will burst firecrackers and light up flowerpots and sparklers to their hearts content this Diwali.

SRK & Bachchan trio steal the show

    2007/11/6 17:56:05

Bachchan trio and SRK make policemens Diwali.

There was a lot to watch out for on Sunday night at the annual pre-Diwali function that was held for Mumbais police force at the Andheri Sports Complex.

A lot of Bollywood stars graced the occasion, but the ones who stole the limelight were the Bachchans. Amitabh and Abhishek walked in with the pretty Bachchan bahu, Aishwarya. According to sources, while the Bachchans were enjoying the performances, King Khan walked in.

At that point, the trio had got up to leave and were on their way out, but they were blocked by Shah Rukh Khan.

The Bollywood Badshah greeted Big B and Abhishek with a warm hug and cordial handshake. After the formal greetings, SRK proceeded backstage for his performance with Deepika Padukone and Shreyas Talpade.

Unfortunately, the Bachchan trio could not stay to watch his performance. The policemen and their families were fully entertained, though. That little scene between the Bachchans and the Khan, was paisa vasool and more. It brought the sparkle to their Diwali

Who will win this Diwali in Bollywood?

    2006/8/3 17:31:52

The stage is set. The cards have been laid down. Now its up to you. You will decide who tops the box office this Diwali.

Here is our (radiosargam.com) verdict on the results of this big box office battle.

    1. Don
    2. Jaan-E-Mann
    3. Umrao Jaan
    4. Familywala

Shah Rukh fans will flock to the cinemas to see him recreate the Amitabh Bachchan magic. Plus the look of the film is sleek and professional, and on top of that Priyanka Chopra in a bikini. Fireworks from Farhan.

Akshay Kumar is always dependable at the box office, and he always churns out reasonable results. Now add Salman Khan to that equation and you have a sure fire hit. But the film is a stale project which has been in production for a long time, and this may itself be its ultimate letdown.

Aishwarya Rai wearing loads of clothes and playing a shy woman in J. P. Duttas epic tale of love and tragedy. Not something that a Diwali relaxing audience would want to see. Abhishek Bachchan may be riding high in the hearts of Bollywoods many fans, but can he pull of a dramatic role such as this? This film will fail to impress and be the first to be burnt this Diwali.

Finally, Arjun Rampal and Familywala. What can be said about this? Only a fool can expect it to create magic this Diwali, up against the real big-wigs. But fools sometimes do come up trumps. If it is comedy that the Diwali audience want, then this might just make its money.

All in all, this Diwali will be spent at the local multiplex.

SRK, in a happy state of unemployment

    2007/11/11 10:41:17

At the recently held function for the Mumbai Police, Shahrukh Khan was seen extending a hand of friendship towards Big B. However, reports are that he just got thoroughly ignored by the Bachchans

At the recently held function for the Mumbai Police, Shahrukh Khan was seen extending a hand of friendship towards Big B. However, reports are that he just got thoroughly ignored by the Bachchans. Say this to King Khan, who was seen promoting his forthcoming film, Om Shanti Om at an event and the otherwise cool Khan was almost irked.

He said, We are good people. We have a lot of respect. Every time we meet, people say the same things about a cold war. Now its getting boring. I am no longer pissed off. Its just too boring. I like him a lot. I respect him and his family a lot. We are educated people.

Well, people talk about what they see. Anyway, his admiration for Big B is quite evident in the promos of Om Shanti Om. SRK even says, I am very inspired by Amitji. I have grown up watching him. Om Shanti Om is inspired by his films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Parvarish and Sholay.

Shahrukh will be yet again competing with Salman this Diwali. This year, as SRKs Om Shanti Om hits the big screen, so will Salmans Saawariya. Does that make King Khan any nervous? He retorts, No I never get nervous. Yes, there is some anxiety since everything is readybut you just get anxious to see the product

Reports are that Shahrukh Khan has no projects in hand for the next eight months. SRK confirmed the news by quipping, I am in a happy state of unemployment. Well, doesnt eight months seem to be a long time for a workaholic like SRK to be happy in?

The Great Diwali Dhamaka - Bhansali VS SRK

    2007/6/1 10:46:00

They came together five years ago for the monumental Devdas . But now the mighty movie moghul Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his 'Devdas' Shah Rukh Khan are ready to lock horns.

Producer SRK has decided to release his Bollywood spoof Om Shanti Om during the Diwali week during the same week as Sanjay Bhansali's eagerly-awaited opus Sawariya.

SRK's unexpected move has caused some dismay among the cast and crew of both the films. It is felt that bringing in Om Shanti Om into the coveted Diwali week would eat into the market of both the multi-crore films.

Says a source, "While Om Shanti Om has Bollywood's biggest superstar in the winning combination from Main Hoon Na with director Farah Khan, Sawariya has the magician himself, Bhansali returning to the song and dance extravaganza of Devdas. There's also the curiosity to see Rishi Kapoor's son with Anil Kapoor's daughter in Sawariya. And if Om Shanti Om has King Khan, Bhansali has cleverly slipped Salman Khan with Rani Mukherjee in extended roles for Sawariya. So the stakes are equal between the two films."

Nevertheless there was even some serious talk of shifting Sawariya to a later date. But now the two formidable films will take on each other.

Get ready for extra fireworks this Diwali.

Mumbai blasts underlines need for police reforms: LSP

2011/7/14 19:25:31 The latest series of Mumbai blasts once again underline the need for promoting community policing and expediting the long-delayed police reforms, said the Lok Satta Party on Thursday.

Expressing the partys condolences to the families of the Mumbai blast victims, Lok Satta Party working president DVVS Varma said in a media statement that extremists have been wreaking havoc with impunity, by taking advantage of the nexus between mafias on the one hand and politicians and police on the other.

Mr Varma demanded an immediate end to politicians interference in the day-to-day police functioning so that they could discharge their duties fearlessly.

Encouragement of community policing through constitution of neighborhood watch groups would enable the police to function much more effectively. Both steps are necessary to strengthen the preventive intelligence mechanism of our security agencies.

Mr Varma wanted the Government to extend compensation to victims families promptly by recalling that there was undue delay in providing effective relief and compensation to families of Hyderabad bombing victims.(INN)

For TV stars, Diwali means family time!

2011/10/22 12:19:18 New Delhi, Oct 22 (IANS) Away from their busy, chock-a-block shooting schedules, small screen stars are looking forward to celebrating Diwali in the company of their family members and friends.

Actors like Samir Soni, Avika Gor and Shashank Vyas hope to get time off work to shop, decorate their homes with lights and rangoli, burst crackers and gorge on sweets. And those who won't get a break, are excited about spending the festival with their colleagues on the sets.

Here are plans of some actors:

Samir Soni: I celebrate Diwali with my family in Delhi. This year is no different as I and my wife will go to Delhi and celebrate the festival of lights with our family. I believe Diwali is one of the rare occasions when all friends and family get together and spend time with one another.

Avika Gor: Diwali is my favourite time of the year. From Dhanteras to Bhaiduj, I love all of it. The sparklers, the temples, the diyas and the happiness of being together with family fill so much happiness in our lives. I love shopping for new clothes, bursting crackers and also the fact that we get to eat so many sweets.

Pratyusha Bannerjee: A few years back, I was sitting on my terrace, enjoying the bright lightings and the crazy sound of the sparkling crackers. I was enjoying a lot, but when I witnessed the smoke and residue of the crackers, I changed my way of celebrating Diwali.

I realised these crackers spread so much air and sound pollution. Since then, I have been celebrating an environment-friendly Diwali with lots of sweets, shopping, diyas and rangolis - which is equally satisfying.

Shashank Vyas: Given that I am shooting throughout the year, Diwali is a period that we spend together at home in blissful solitude. Diwali means a lot of revelry and fireworks. As a child, I used to relish bursting crackers with my father as that was my idea of fun for Diwali.

But when I grew up and saw a child playing frivolously with crackers, I could not stop myself and ran out to stop the child and explain to him how to have a safe Diwali.

Apara Mehta: Diwali is never the same if not celebrated with your family. It is that time when my entire family gets together first for the Dhanteras puja and then the main Diwali puja. We have a family dinner on our terrace where we all get together to burst crackers and eat sweetmeats under the starry sky.

Kritika Kamra: I have always celebrated Diwali with my family. But this year I am unable to meet them due to a hectic shoot schedule. Surely I am going to miss my family.

Ankita Lokhande: I have always loved this festival of lights...making rangolis and bursting crackers is so much fun! We also have a small celebration on our sets as well. It is like one big happy family! The huge variety of sweets that one has at home makes this my time of indulgence.

Vibha Chibber: It's the time of the year when we celebrate with our near and dear ones. It brings all of us closer. It spreads so much cheer. This year I have full plans of celebrating Diwali with the cast and crew of my show. There's going to be a big celebration on the sets. I have also invited all my co-actors to my place on the Diwali day for a gala dinner!

Rubina Dilaik: This year I'm hoping for a day off from the shoot of "Choti Bahu" a couple of days prior to Diwali so that I can go shopping for diyas and decorate my house beautifully. This is the only time when the entire family gets together and we all exchange gifts. Mumbai at this time is dotted with lights and it's a wonderful sight to see every nook and corner lit up.

    Mohanlal loses his voice

2006/10/23 19:15:52 While playing Thakur Baldev Singh in Sholay, the actor screamed himself hoarse

    Subhash K Jha

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal was unprepared for what lay in store for him when he was in Mumbai busy shooting for Ram Gopal Varma's Sholay. The actor reprises the role of Thakur Baldev Singh, originally played by Sanjeev Kumar.

Mohanlal lost his voice while enacting some dramatic scenes for Ramu's Sholay on Diwali day. The scenes were very dramatic. They required me to scream and shout a lot. Ive almost lost my voice as my throat is stressed, whispers Mohanlal.

However, this did not stop Mohanlal from shooting and he continued working on the day after Diwali. I continued shooting because it had to be completed and Ive to return home in two days, adds Mohanlal.

Ramu says, Weve been shooting solo scenes with Mohanlal during Diwali. The scenes required Mohanlal to scream a lot. That must have resulted in Mohanlal losing his voice. Im sure he'll be fine soon.

In the past, the actor is known to be very selective about his roles in Hindi films and was last seen in Ram Gopal Varmas Company where he played an honest police officer.

    This Diwali poor business expected

    2011/10/20 14:31:38

Greater environmental awareness, rising prices of firecrackers and constant cracker free Diwali campaigns have severely hit demand for firecrackers which is likely to drop by about 35 to 40 per cent during this year, according to a just concluded survey of apex industry body ASSOCHAM.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) interacted with about 250 fire cracker manufacturers in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu and about 500 fireworks’ dealers, traders, shopkeepers and retailers at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune at various wholesale and retail markets between September and October 15 to gauge the mood in the domestic firecracker industry.

Abnormal increase in fuel prices, increased road freight, escalating raw material (sulphur, potassium nitrate and waste paper) prices due to shortage, rising wages and lack of skilled labour, other miscellaneous levies and recent bomb blasts in the country are certain key reasons cited by majority of respondents that might lead to a slump in profits of firecracker industry this festive season, highlights the ASSOCHAM survey.

“Due to escalating fuel prices the road freight rates have also gone up along with other operational costs. Besides, prices of tyres, lubricants and the wages of the drivers have also increased significantly and all these issues are going to impact margins of the firecracker industry,” said ASSOCHAM Secretary General DS Rawat while releasing the findings of the survey.

“A considerable increase of about 30 to 50 per cent in the cost of crackers (across all range) since last year is expected this Diwali,” said Rawat. “But Diwali is known for lighting and fireworks, people are not going to call off their celebrations barely because of price rise but are surely going to cut their budget for firecrackers considerably thereby dampening the festive mood.”

The domestic firecracker industry which according to an ASSOCHAM estimate is about Rs 1,200 crore has been in the doldrums for past couple of years. Sivakasi is home to over 9,500 firecracker factories and produce almost 100 per cent of total fireworks output in India. The fireworks industry employs about 1.5 lakh people including the organised and unorganised sector.

Nearly 55 per cent of firecracker manufacturers and wholesalers in Sivakasi said there has been a drop of about 15 per cent in orders from northern states which consume over 75 per cent of total fireworks production.

Majority of firecracker manufactures in Sivakasi said cost of producing crackers have gone up by about 25 to 30 per cent this year due to rising labour wages and skyrocketing prices of raw material.

About 35 per cent of these said they have stepped up production of smokeless firecrackers to lure buyers as they emanate variety of colours and light and contain more herbs, less-smoke emitting chemicals and are less noisy.

Increase in number of illegal firecracker units in and around Sivakasi is also denting the prospects of the industry and are doing a brisk business thriving on cheaper cost price of their product, said most of the respondents.

Nearly 65 per cent of traders, retailers at Hyderabad’s Begum Bazar, Sanath Nagar and Malakpet said business has been real slow and profits have only dipped since 2008-09 and resultantly they are not even able to recover the cost of investment incurred.

Majority of these said rising environmental awareness, competition and restrictions of the local administration and fire department are largely responsible for this gradual slump in the fireworks’ industry.

Over half of the respondents said since last two years their profit margins have trimmed by over 35 per cent and have been suffering bad losses.

Almost all the fireworks’ traders interviewed said they are also informing the customers about the details of decibel level and manufacturing date considering people have started realising ill-effects of crackers on the environment.

About 2,500 temporary stalls, shops come up in the city every year to sell firecrackers cashing in on the Diwali jubilance. For most of these shopkeepers selling firecrackers is a traditional profitable business and they go slow on their usual business or profession to make a windfall during the annual festival. (INN)

Ra.One won't affect our film: Hema Malini

    2011/9/20 11:11:08

It's not as if people would want to watch only one film during Diwali, says Hema Malini who has decided to release her daughter Esha Deol's relaunch "Tell Me O Khuda" with Shah Rukh Khan's sci-fi "RA.One".

"We had a meeting with the distributors and exhibitors on Friday. And we all decided to go for a Diwali release. I was advised against it since 'RA.One' is also releasing for Diwali. But it's not as if people would want to watch only one film during Diwali," said Hema.

"If they like both they'll see them both. I personally think Diwali is a wonderful window for any auspicious film. Some of the biggest successes have happened during the festive season. So why not go for it?"

Hema isn't afraid of the competition. "We've made an emotional father-daughter story. I don't think we need to fear competition from anyone."

Apparently SRK has welcomed "Tell Me Of Khuda" with open arms into the Diwali release schedule.

"Shah Rukh and Hemaji go back a long way. In fact, Hemaji was the first producer to sign Shah Rukh for 'Dil Aashna Hai' which she directed. Ever since then Shah Rukh has had the highest regard for Hemaji," said a source.(IANS)
