'My film is not a remake'

    2008/2/28 11:08:43

He's just a few films old and already boasts of three smash hits. In quick time, Vishal, son of producer GK Reddy, has become a name to reckon with in the Tamil and Telugu film industry.

BT catches up with the TDH hero who is shooting in Hyderabad for his forthcoming flick. His new film called Satyam is incidentally being simultaneously shot in Telugu as well, all his earlier movies having hitherto only been dubbed into Telugu.

I play a cop in the film and this would be my first attempt at portraying a police officer,” says the actor, explaining that his new, lean and mean look is specially for this film. Remind him that there has been a Malayalam movie by the same name that starred Prithviraj as a cop and Vishal quickly retorts, “My film is not a remake.”

Satyam will see the actor pair up with Nayantara, while Kannada superstar Upendra adds to the star cast as the villain. And while Satyam is slated for a summer release, the actor is all gung-ho about his next project that will see him in the role of a superhero. “It’s going to be a big budget movie to be directed by Miskin of Anjathe fame. We begin shooting in August,” says a beaming Vishal, adding that the female lead was yet to be zeroed in on. The yet-to-be-titled flick is currently in pre-production and will be loaded with all the right ingredients for a commercial movie, says Vishal. “There will be action and romance and at the expense of sounding cliched, this superhero will woo a woman because, after all, he’s a human being,” he adds.

Vishal, who began his career with the romantic flick Chellame, switched gears in his next two films, Sandakozhi and Thimiru, which incidentally were home productions, and donned the action cap. Was it a conscious decision to create an action-hero image? “Not exactly. Sandakozhi and Thimiru weren’t just action flicks; they just had all elements required for a commercial movie. Post these two films, people have been convinced that I can do action successfully. But yes, I have trained in Taekwondo for some time, so am comfortable doing action,” says the actor, who’s fascinated with Korean films.

Now that he has established himself in the Tamil and Telugu film industry, what next? “I would love to work in a Malayalam movie. Some of the most intelligent Indian films are made in Malayalam and doing one would be a great challenge. In the long run, I should be proud of my resume,” he quips.

So, what about all the rumour mills that have been spinning overtime, linking him to a leading Tamil actress and his supposed revelation that he is indeed in love? “There’s no truth in these rumours. I’m still single (pauses) and ready to mingle,” he signs off.
