sponsors logging on to internet: IPL 2012

IPL5 will open on Monday with traditional razzmatazz and while production teams for the opening gala that's said to cost Rs 25 crore are hard at work, broadcaster Set Max is still trying to rope in advertisers. So far it has 6 sponsors on board - and that's 5 short of the 11 sponsors it had last year. In contrast the online and mobile feeds, that are far cheaper, are seeing much higher advertiser interest.

Supreme Court says to not act against top 10 internet companies for sharing data

2013/6/27 17:16:04 New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against nine internet companies for allegedly sharing information of Indian citizens with US intelligence agencies.

Among the nine internet companies are Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Yahoo. The PIL was filed last week to ensure that the rights of internet users are protected.

The apex court said it cannot entertain the petition as Indian agency is not involved in it and allowed the petitioner, former dean of Law Faculty of Delhi University SN Singh, to move any other forum for seeking remedy against Internet companies and the US agency for snooping data resulting in violation of right to privacy.

The bench also said that the court cannot direct Parliament to enact law to safeguard privacy of citizens against such snooping.

In his plea, Singh had alleged that such largescale spying by the US authorities is detrimental to national security and urged the apex court to intervene in the matter.

He had claimed that the Internet companies are sharing information with the foreign authority in "breach" of contract and violation of right to privacy.

Singh had submitted that it is a breach of national security as government's official communications have come under US surveillance as services of private Internet firms are being used by them.

He had sought directions to the Centre to "take urgent steps to safeguard the government's sensitive Internet communications" which are being kept outside India in US servers and are "unlawfully intruded upon by US Intelligence Agencies through US-based Internet companies under secret surveillance program called PRISM".

In his petition, Singh had also sought directions restraining the government and its officials from using US-based Internet companies for official communication and that all such companies, which are doing business in India, must establish their servers here so that they can be regulated as per Indian laws.

The Centre had earlier on June 11 expressed surprise and concern over the snooping and said it will seek information and details from the US over reports that India was the fifth most tracked country by the American intelligence which used a secret data-mining programme to monitor worldwide Internet data.

Nokia to focus on sub-Rs.6,000 category

2011/10/31 16:32:37 Kolkata, Oct 31 (IANS) The mobile handset market below the price point of Rs.6,000 is expected to grow at five to six percent annually in India, mobile handset giant Nokia said Monday, adding it will emphasize on becoming more competitive in this segment.

"The growth will come from sub-brands priced below Rs.6,000. At present, in India, there are around 22 million Facebook users and it will go up to 30 million by December this year," Nokia India's head of services Jasmeet Gandhi told reporters on the sidelines of a programme to publish a study conducted by research company Nielsen on internet usage through mobile phones.

The study on internet usage through mobile phones in the sub-Rs.6,000 price category shows that there is a huge shift in the way consumers use internet through mobile phones.

"Price and brand play a big role. We will be more competitive in providing features in the handsets of sub-Rs.6,000 price segment," Gandhi said.

The demand for using internet from mobile phones was growing, he added.

The handset maker is working with a third party that is engaged in development of the system and applications-based features in the sub-Rs.6,000 category for the company, he said.

Tags to Raj Kapoor lounge - sponsors chip in at IFFI

2011/11/18 22:39:05 Panaji, Nov 18 (IANS) Special check-in baggage tags, dedicated baggage handlers to sipping beer at the Raj Kapoor lounge, organisers of the 42nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) Friday said long-term partnerships with sponsors were beginning to pay off.

Manoj Srivastva, chief executive officer of the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), one of organisers of the event, said special efforts had been made, courtesy the sponsors, to ensure that the 8,000-odd delegates who come to the festival are made to feel at home.

"We ensured that special baggage tags have been mailed to the delegates who can attach them to their check-in luggage so that dedicated baggage handlers can pick the stuff up from the belt and avoid confusion at the airport," Srivastava said at a press conference here.

Said Shaji Thomas, spokesperson for the Qatar airways in Goa: "Qatar airways have sponsored tickets worth Rs.8 lakh and this is the second time we are partnering with IFFI and flying in their delegates. This association is paying off for us."

Qatar airways will also sponsor three lounges at the IFFI venue.

"We have the Raj Kapoor lounge for producers and directors, the actors lounge where actors can spend time and the IFFI lounge areas. All of them are sponsored by Qatar airways," Srivastava said.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan will inaugurate the 42nd IFFI to be held here Nov 23-Dec 3.

Govind Tiwari, divisional vice president of the United Breweries (UB) group, said the liquor company - which manufactures Kingfisher beer -- already had an 85 percent market share in Goa and that the association with IFFI ever since it shifted to Goa in 2004 was a matter of privilege.

"We do not look for financial returns every time. Goa is a great place to be in. It is good that IFFI is held here," Tiwari said.

IFFI director Shankar Mohan said sponsorship money and barter deals accounted for nearly Rs.4.7 crore out of the total Rs.8 crore expenditure which was to be incurred for IFFI this year.

"The union tourism ministry has sponsored Rs.2.7 crore. IFFI will be used as part of 'Incredible India' - a tourism promotion campaign launched by the ministry. We will also screen a specially curated session on tourism films," Mohan said.

    Sonu: Tech that!

    2007/9/8 10:01:14

Sonu Nigam, who is presently in the US, just recorded a title track which was monitored by music composer Raju Singh who was on the webcam.

Recording an entire song on the internet is no longer a distant reality. Sonu Nigam, who is presently in the US, just recorded the title track for a new soap. The tune was emailed to him. His rendition, however, was monitored by music composer Raju Singh who was on the webcam giving out instructions.

The channel heads had wanted only Sonu to lend his voice to the title track of the show which goes on air later this month. But, with Sonu holidaying in the US they weren't left with any option other than settling for another vocalist. This is when Raju suggested that they record the song using the internet. Sonu readily agreed and he headed to a local recording studio along with his laptop and webcam. And the song was recorded in just about 90 minutes.

An ecstatic Singh says, "Sonu was live with me on the webcam from the US and I explained to him what I actually wanted. I sent him the tune on the internet and he sang the song accordingly. It was as good as him sitting before me at a recording studio. Technology is such a blessing."

2008/5/23 13:01:22 When was the last time you watched the trailer of a film at a cinema hall? It must be years and years ago, before the advent of television channels and the internet. At that time, the only avenue for trailers was the cinema hall.

Now Television channels and internet are the most preferred choice for producers and director to publicize their new films.

So it is a pleasant surprise to see trailers back in cinema halls after a long time. The trailers of ‘Sultan the Warrior was shown along with ‘Sivaji’. The trailer of ‘Bujjigadu made in Chennai’ was screened along with Parugu.

Now the trailers of ‘Victory’ and Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus, ‘Dasavatharam’ are being screened at many cinema halls where ‘Bujjigadu’ is running.
